	<title>Seal - Change Gonna Come</title>

Plus, judging from the trailer, it looks like the Black version of &amp;#60;I&amp;#62;Blues Brothers&amp;#60;/i&amp;#62;...but not necessarily destined to be a classic. For the film, Stax commissioned a slew of folks to record both new songs and covers of classic soul tunes, including &amp;#34;I&amp;#39;m Your Puppet&amp;#34; by the Purify brothers. &amp;#60;br /&amp;#62;&amp;#60;br /&amp;#62;And coincidentally, Seal is currently touting the lead video to his new album of soul covers: a cover of Sam Cooke&amp;#39;s &amp;#34;Change Gonna Come.&amp;#34; (You&amp;#39;ll have to pardon the thin, mono mix but that&amp;#39;s all that&amp;#39;s available for it right now).&amp;#60;br /&amp;#62;&amp;#60;br /&amp;#62;So what&amp;#39;s the verdict? &amp;#60;br /&amp;#62;&amp;#60;br /&amp;#62;I&amp;#39;m on the fence with Seal&amp;#39;s song. It begins fairly close to Cooke&amp;#39;s original but then shifts towards the end but either way, this comes up a bit short for me. I can&amp;#39;t really pinpoint to anything technically wrong - Seal has a great voice and he executes this well - but with a song like &amp;#34;Change Gonna Come&amp;#34;; it is such a definitive song in the soul canon that it&amp;#39;s very hard to effectively cover without simply reminding people how good the original was. There are very few artists who have managed to even approach the power of the original - that includes &amp;#60;a href=&amp;#34;http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onN9qSTLaAo&amp;#34; target=&amp;#34;_blank&amp;#34;&amp;#62;Aretha Franklin&amp;#39;s take&amp;#60;/a&amp;#62; - but we&amp;#39;re talking rarefied company and while I think Seal has the vocal chops, the song still doesn&amp;#39;t achieve that transcendent moment you&amp;#39;re hoping for. I&amp;#39;d rather hear him tackle something a bit more obscure. I&amp;#39;ll reserve final judgment until I hear the album; I&amp;#39;m curious to hear him do &amp;#34;I Can&amp;#39;t Stand the Rain&amp;#34; (Ann Peebles).&amp;#60;br /&amp;#62;&amp;#60;br /&amp;#62;As for John Legend taking on the Purifys...I was more open to this, partially because it doesn&amp;#39;t hide that it&amp;#39;s a contemporary cover - this was clearly recorded now and not back in the &amp;#39;60s. Also, &amp;#34;I&amp;#39;m Your Puppet&amp;#34; is a more forgiving song to cover - what makes it such a classic has more to do with its signature melody than the Purifys&amp;#39; original vocals. So in essence, as long as you keep that melody intact, you can come at this song any number of ways and generally, it&amp;#39;ll sound good (check out &amp;#60;a href=&amp;#34;http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UY13lEcOQoo&amp;#34; target=&amp;#34;_blank&amp;#34;&amp;#62;Jimmy London&amp;#39;s reggae version&amp;#60;/a&amp;#62; for example. There&amp;#39;s also &amp;#60;a href=&amp;#34;http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYS0PxE5QhU&amp;feature=related&amp;#34; target=&amp;#34;_blank&amp;#34;&amp;#62;Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell&amp;#39;s duet&amp;#60;/a&amp;#62; version.) My point being: I think Legend does a fine job here - he puts his own vocal spin on it but sustains the main musical appeal of the composition. &amp;#60;br /&amp;#62;&amp;#60;hr&amp;#62;&amp;#60;B&amp;#62;Elsewhere&amp;#60;/b&amp;#62;, if you haven&amp;#39;t checked in on Side Dishes lately, here&amp;#39;s what you&amp;#39;ve missed:&amp;#60;br /&amp;#62;&amp;#60;li&amp;#62;&amp;#60;a href=&amp;#34;http://blogs.vibe.com/oliverwang/2008/10/menahan-street-band-the-road-less-travelled/&amp;#34; target=&amp;#34;_blank&amp;#34;&amp;#62;My take&amp;#60;/a&amp;#62; on the new Menahan Street Band album.&amp;#60;br /&amp;#62;&amp;#60;LI&amp;#62;A longer &amp;#60;a href=&amp;#34;http://blogs.vibe.com/oliverwang/2008/10/alton-ellis-rocksteady-soul/&amp;#34; target=&amp;#34;_blank&amp;#34;&amp;#62;tribute to Alton Ellis&amp;#60;/a&amp;#62;.&amp;#60;br /&amp;#62;&amp;#60;li&amp;#62;Reviews of new albums by &amp;#60;a href=&amp;#34;http://blogs.vibe.com/oliverwang/2008/10/robin-thicke-mr-harmony/&amp;#34; target=&amp;#34;_blank&amp;#34;&amp;#62;Robin Thicke&amp;#60;/a&amp;#62; and &amp;#60;a href=&amp;#34;http://blogs.vibe.com/oliverwang/2008/09/solange-knowles-still-standing-solo/&amp;#34; target=&amp;#34;_blank&amp;#34;&amp;#62;Solange Knowles&amp;#60;/a&amp;#62;.&amp;#60;br /&amp;#62;&amp;#60;br /&amp;#62;&amp;#60;br /&amp;#62;&amp;#60;br /&amp;#62;

In this case, DJ Premier sampled two different portions from the same original source: &amp;#34;Funk It Up&amp;#34; from Caesar Frazier&amp;#39;s &amp;#60;I&amp;#62;other&amp;#60;/i&amp;#62; Eastbound album, &amp;#60;I&amp;#62;75&amp;#60;/i&amp;#62;. (&amp;#60;a href=&amp;#34;http://soul-sides.com/2005/06/caesar-frazier-producers-choice.html&amp;#34; target=&amp;#34;_blank&amp;#34;&amp;#62;I put this up&amp;#60;/a&amp;#62; a little over 2 years ago. Fans of this series will get a kick out of the first line of that old post. Looks like I&amp;#39;ve backed off my own policy, at least for the time being). &amp;#60;br /&amp;#62;&amp;#60;br /&amp;#62;Personally, I like that a producer would go back to a once-used source and find a new way to flip it (better than Marley putting out both &amp;#34;Ain&amp;#39;t No Half Steppin&amp;#34; then &amp;#34;Pink Cookies in a Plastic Bag&amp;#34;...one of the stranger re-uses I&amp;#39;ve heard). There&amp;#39;s a rather obvious Dilla example of this too which I might throw up at some point. &amp;#60;br /&amp;#62;&amp;#60;br /&amp;#62;What&amp;#39;s so striking in this case though is how utterly different the two uses sound which reflects the differences in the portions of Frazier&amp;#39;s original. It&amp;#39;s unexpected that a single source would yield such contrasting sonic styles. &amp;#60;br /&amp;#62;&amp;#60;br /&amp;#62;
